Justin Case You Were Wondering…About Justin
Hey, all. How’s it going? People tell me I always say that, so figured I should say it here.
Professionally, I recently joined Fleishman-Hillard in Kansas City. My job title? Not much for titles, but I usually say “social media guy.” It’s a self-appointed title that means I do social media strategy and education work for our clients. IOW, if a company wants to know what people are saying about their brand, I work with them to figure that out. Where in the social media space should they have a presence? Can do that one to. Why should my company be using social media? Who cares what I had for lunch and isn’t there real work to do besides blogging? I absolutely love that one. Or how about I see how social media makes sense for Southwest Airlines, Dell and Starbucks, but my company’s different. Had that conversation before as well.
If I’ve learned one thing in working with clients on social media it’s that there are a wide array of ideas and perceptions about what it can, or can’t, do for a brand — professional or personal. I’ve also learned social media is changing the way we communicate and it’s not a static, one-time change, which is what I find so fascinating. PR is different today than it was three months ago. And it will be different three months from now thanks to technology and social media. Heck, it may have even changed why you were reading this. You never know…it could happen.
The only way we can keep up to speed on these changes and how they impact brands is to talk about them. No one person can do it alone. Conversation and sharing are the keys to success. That’s why I started this blog. Because if I just talk to myself about how social media can impact PR, then I’m not really going to get anywhere. I’m just going to get a lot of weird looks…because I’m talking to myself . But in all seriousness, we need each other to make some sense out of it all. So I hope you’ll join the conversation here from time to time.
Personally, I’m married to Maggie and we have two Irish Setters — Jameson and Murphy. I’m a sports fanatic and a huge Royals fan, which means I yell at the TV a lot. My wife says they can’t hear me but I say I’ll keep trying until they do.
I really enjoy writing as you might have guessed, since this is a blog. In fact, I hope to write a book someday. One of my lifelong goals. I enjoy mystery TV shows like Law and Order, I like to read when I have time. I try to golf and my friends put up with how bad I am. Went to college at Northwestern. Love the Denver Broncos even though I live in Kansas City. And North Carolina Tar Heels basketball even though I’m half an hour from KU. Sorry Jayhawks fans. And I’m a huge Bon Jovi fan. In fact, I once won third place in a karaoke contest at Chicago’s John Barleycorn’s with a rousing rendition of Livin’ on a Prayer.
Anyway, that’s me. But enough about me, let’s hear about you. I hope I’ll get to know you a lot better through blog conversations, Twitter, Facebook, wherever it is you like to hang out. There are several ways you can reach me, so always feel free to drop me a line. Let’s stay in touch. Unless you like Duke basketball. Then I’m not so sure we can be friends. Kidding, of course. Sort of.
