Take the #Chatmixer Challenge and meet someone new each week
By Justin Goldsborough | March 1st, 2010
“Business, projects, speaking opportunities, friends, learning opportunities and just about everything else positive that happens in your professional life can typically be traced back to personal relationships.”
Those are the words my friend and Help A PR Pro Out (HAPPO) co-founder Arik Hanson recently shared in a post titled “What Does Tomorrow’s PR Pro Look Like?”
So why am I sharing them with you here? Well first, they are words to live by. In today’s social media world, whether you’re a PR Pro or a professional in any other industry, you’ve got nothing without relationships.
But second, I think these words are a near-perfect answer to the questions so many people still have about social networking in general — What’s the value? Is it worth my time? What’s the ROI?
When answering questions like these, it’s important to step away from the technology. Would going to a local PRSA or IABC event to network be beneficial? Do people frequently make time for those types of engagements? Well, social networking — namely Twitter — has expanded my network more than tenfold. I could have gone my whole life attending solely offline get togethers and happy hours and never come close to building the network I already have today.
But what’s most exciting is what my network might look like a year from now, 10 years from now, or even at the end of next week, because of how easy it is to meet new people on a daily basis via Twitter and other social networks. And that’s what #chatmixer is all about
#Chatmixer is an online chat event designed to help people interested in PR and social media forge new connections and build their network — and it’s the first time that all the PR/SM chats will join forces. My awesome co-hosts Heather Whaling, Valerie Simon and I hope you’ll join us next Tuesday, March 9, at 8 EST for a chance to expand your network, meet new people and continue striving for the goal that, as Arik Hanson said, keeps on giving — building relationships.
So make a promise to yourself, and to us, to meet at least one new person each week beginning today! #Chatmixer will make it easy for you get started and you can invite the person you meet this week to attend #chatmixer with you March 9. Also, let’s make sure to touch base again a year from now to see where your network is and see how those first relationships you started during #chatmixer have developed.
I’m including the #chatmixer event details below so you understand the tentative agenda for the event. We’ll stick to it as much as possible, but the overall goal is to have fun and meet someone new. Let Valerie, Heather or I know if you have any questions. You can also feel free to post questions in the comments here. We want you to get as much as possible out of this event. Hope to see you next Tuesday!
