One of my favorite sayings when trying to explain social media goes as follows: “Customer expectations of brands are changing. You can’t just ride your bike by my house and throw papers at my door like you used to. That doesn’t cut it anymore. Come to my door and knock. I’ll invite you in and let’s have a conversation.”
That’s social media. That’s communications in a 2.0 world. And that’s Paul Baltzer. As in, that quote came from him. And it’s one of the best ways I can share the value I think he provides as a PR Pro. You hear people say sometimes that they have a colleague who just “gets it.” Paul “gets it.” He’s a veteran communicator with a variety of experience and when we worked together at Sprint he did everything from write a press release and story for the employee Intranet to film a video, edit it in iMovie and share it on Sprint’s external customer community Buzz About Wireless.
Although Paul is currently looking for job opportunities in the Kansas City area, he is also open to relocation.
But enough from me. Check out what Paul has to say about himself via his cover letter. And better yet, read his former colleagues’ thoughts on what he brings to the table.
Paul’s cover letter story
Paul is an organizational communications professional with multi-level, multi-functional work experience, including two international assignments. He has worked in the telecommunications, pharmaceutical, and greeting card industries and has served as a company spokesperson for a Fortune 100 company.
First and foremost, he is a storyteller who enjoys conversations and helping clients and colleagues connect with others. His areas of expertise include: internal communications; media relations; strategic and executive communications; social media and digital communications; video production; issues management; marketing and brand communications.
He has led high-performing teams and managed global agencies as a client. Possessing strong project management skills, he has worked closely with senior leadership, thought leaders and subject matter experts to provide strategic, integrated communications programs.
Recommendations
Paul is an intuitive and highly experienced public relations professional with excellent local knowledge as well as a firm understanding of diverse international markets and cultural differences. He is results-driven while displaying a high degree of integrity and sense of fair play with his colleagues and contracted consultants alike. Paul is also a dedicated and effective manager who communicates the required outcomes with clarity, practicality and respect, empowering those around him to take ownership of their work and to simply ‘get on with it’. In a PR consultant’s world these sorts of client attributes are very highly prized indeed.

I don’t write recommendations often, but I feel Paul is beyond deserving of one. As my wife and I traveled across America to promote the early detection and prevention of breast cancer, we worked with the supplies we had: Barely anything, no budget, and a Sprint phone with a 400 minutes a month plan. On our first tour stop in Washington, D.C. I burned through most of our minutes, leaving us in the lurch for the rest of the project. Paul saw the message I sent out on Twitter about our emerging problem and offered a prompt solution. Thanks to Paul’s quick response, my wife and I were able to work with him in completing our project successfully. It’s not often one can say this, but without exaggeration, Paul’s help saved lives as we were able to successfully promote our message of early detection across America. Throughout the project, Paul reached out to us to check in and see how we were doing, bringing a personal and trusted touch that is rare in today’s workplace culture. Amanda and I are thankful for Paul’s help, and I highly recommend him to any party in need of a man who can offer quick, reliable solutions with a warm personal touch.

Words to describe Paul’s communication talent — creative, strategic, versatile. He has excelled in a wide variety of communications jobs, and his “typical day” on the job could range from pitching a communication plan, employee messaging, video shoot, media training, executive speech writing, media interview, photoshop an image for a web article… you get the picture. He also has a real knack for combining visual imagery and copy to create the most compelling communication piece.
– Susan Waldron, worked with Paul as Director of Corporate Communications at Sprint
Paul is a passionate planner. He’s great at connecting PR strategy with communications and marketing trends, tools and technologies, and he knows how to deliver for real audience impact.
– E. Scott Cole, manager-Corporate Communications, YRC Worldwide (previously: communications manager at Sprint Nextel Corp.)
Paul worked for me in the Communications Department at the former Hoechst Marion Roussel Pharmaceuticals (now Sanofi Aventis), where he was in charge of internal publications and also a producer in visual communications. He served with distinction in the U.S. as well as three years at corporate headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. Paul is a creative and insightful communications professional, who took the lead on many projects and was successful in them all.
