    Skip something, feed a child

    By Justin Goldsborough | December 12th, 2009

Is there something you could skip for a day? You know, that Starbucks gingerbread latte, going out to eat for lunch, that new shirt, stocking stuffers, going to the movies? Everybody has something. And if you skip it for just one day, you could make sure a child in need has food to eat and water to drink.

I’d never heard of Skip1.org until about a week ago. When I was a kid, “Skip it” was a new toy with a really annoying commercial jingle. But now it’s a community of people giving up something(s) they do frequently to help out those less fortunate. Pretty awesome concept when you think about it…and so simple to get involved. Just skip something and donate the money you would have spent. Your money goes to Skip1.org,which is a division of the Children’s Hunger Fund.

One of the coolest things about Skip1.org is the ways this org promotes community. There’s a list of icons on the home page so you can connect with other donors in all the social networks where Skip1 has a presence, such as Facebook and Twitter. And the Web site itself has a donor leaderboard so you can see who else is skipping along with you and what they’re giving up. The current leader is @chrisbrogan. You might have heard of him before :).

Maggie and I usually get Chinese food every Friday night. Maybe we’ll skip that next week. What will you skip? Let us know in the comments.
