GUEST POST: ACES VIDEO COURTESY OF ARIK HANSON

As a lifetime Kansas City Royals fan, I’ve always been jealous of Minnesota. After all, the Twins contend every year with about the same size payroll we have, they play the game the right way and they have a bunch of class acts on the team like Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau (Love Morneau’s first name too, LOL).

So it came as little surprise when I started blogging 30 causes in 30 days that I heard from my friend Arik Hanson about an awesome nonprofit program in Minnesota involving proffesional sports teams and great people doing things the right way. Arik actually volunteers for the organization I’m referring to — ACES (Athletes Committed to Educating Students) — and he filmed the video below with ACES Development and Marketing Coordinator Chad Caruthers.

I want to let Arik and Chad tell you about ACES and what their cause does for the Minnesota community. But I did want to share a bit of info about the group first and a cool promotion I just read about on the ACES Facebook fan page. ACES bread and butter is to mentor/tutor inner city youth in the 4th-8th grades.  And they try to make learning fun. Chad shares a great story in the video about how when a student has to figure percentages in math class (which I’m still not sure if I can do), instead of just sitting down at a desk and working the problem, ACES volunteers and the student go shoot baskets and figure percentages by how many shots the kid takes versus how many he/she makes.

Several Minnesota professional sports franchises support ACES (follow ACES4Kids on Twitter), including the Twins, Vikings (check out this Q&A opportunity with new wide receiver Percy Harvin), Timberwolves, Wild and Thunder. And ACES gets a ton of community support too. Last week on “Give to the Max Day,” any donations given through GiveMn.org were matched and shared with several Minnesota community causes. More than $14 million was contributed to Minnesota nonprofits and$17,000 of that went to ACES.

So there’s a little about this awesome organization. I’ll let Arik and Chad give you the rest of the scoop while I go see if I can find an organization like ACES in Kansas City somewhere :). Do you know of an organization like ACES in your community?
