I like to think of myself as fairly tech savvy. Except when it comes to tunes in my car. You probably listen to an iPod right? I don’t even listen to songs on the radio. Nope, it’s old school sports talk radio for me. It’s probably the one thing in my life that I’ll never change.
This time of year I’m always glad for talk radio though because the local station I listen too announces their food drive to donate canned goods and raise money for Harvesters. We always try to raid the pantry and find a food barrel somewhere in the city to drop off our donations. But this year my radio station and a few local businesses have added a social media flavor to the food drive and are doing more than ever to bring in food, money and raise awareness.
Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City is partnering with M&I Bank, another radio station (Mix 93.3), Hampton Inn Suites Country Club Plaza and Latte Land for the Tackle Hunger Food Drive. The goal — to raise 150,000 meals or $30,000 to help Harvesters put an end to hunger in Kansas City.
One of the ways this year’s event is different is that anyone, not just Kansas Citians, can participate. For each person who becomes a fan of the Tackle Hunger Food Drive Page on Facebook, M&I will donate $2 to Harvesters. You can also follow the drive on Twitter at @TackleHungerKC.

Right now, the TackleHungerKC Facebook page has 204 fans and the food drive is next Tuesday. How awesome would it be if we could get that number up to at least 1,000 before the Nov. 17. Can you help me out? People don’t have to donate anything unless they want to. They help out the homeless and hungry in Kansas City just by becoming a fan of the food drive. It’s that simple. Let’s see what we can do!
If you’re going to be in Kansas City next Tuesday, the food drive and tailgate will be at M&I Bank on the Plaza. This site has all the info. And it’s a great IRL event.
But let’s supplement the TackleHungerKC effort with a virtual fan drive of our own and show the Kansas City community the power of coming together behind a cause via social media.
