The mustache is making a comeback thanks to #movember

    By Justin Goldsborough | November 11th, 2009

What are your feelings on mustaches? Facial hair in general? And what do these questions have to do with a blog about causes, right? Well, I give you #movember.

Movember is a combination of “mustache” and “November” and it’s a cause designed to support prostate and testicular cancer as a follow up to October’s breast cancer awareness campaign. The I first time I heard about #movember was when I read @jasonfalls Social Media Explorer post where he was trying to raise $1,000 in the month of November to shave his goatee.

I thought Jason had just come up with a creative way to raise money — he’s raised $415 so far btw — but apparently movember is in all reality a mustache movement. Men are supposed to start growing a mustache at the beginning of #movember and sport it all month to raise awareness and funds, women are supposed to support this facial hair phenomenon and then we’re all supposed to have month-end shindigs celebrating the effort. Watch this video and you’ll see what I mean.

Men wanting to grow a mustache can register individually, start a team or join a team at the Movember Foundation Web site.  Of course, women can play too. Proceeds go to benefit Livestrong and The Prostate Cancer Foundation.

What a fun way to raise awareness! No one in my immediate family had really had cancer before until my dad told me he had prostate cancer a couple of years ago. He underwent chemo and is doing fine, but his situation piqued my interest in prostate cancer and it’s nice to see there’s a cause like #movember out there.

Of course, I wasn’t able to find any information on  how men who take a year to grow a real mustache can participate :). Still trying to track those details down.

The #movember movement also got me thinking of famous mustaches. There’s:

What are some of your favorite all-time mustaches? And had you heard of #movember? Know any interesting ways people are raising awareness of it?
